The primary aim of this project is to reevaluate and propose alternative periodizations of Roman history, challenging traditional frameworks and offering fresh perspectives on the major economic, cultural, and administrative shifts that shaped the Roman world. By focusing on transitional periods, such as the crisis of the late Republic or the transformation of the Eastern Roman Empire into Byzantium, the project seeks to highlight these phases as distinct and significant epochs, rather than simply as part of a continuous historical narrative.
Additionally, the project aims to make detailed periodizations and information on Roman history accessible to the general public, providing a deeper understanding of how Roman society evolved over time. Through this, the project seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and public knowledge, offering nuanced insights into the complexities of Roman history that go beyond commonly taught periods like the Kingdom, Republic, and Empire.
To share these findings, the project participants will write and publish a series of articles on various aspects of Roman periodization and historical developments. These articles will be compiled and released together in a booklet, offering a comprehensive resource for both scholars and the general public interested in a more in-depth exploration of Roman history.
